The three larger crocheted roses are all the same pattern.

This page has directions for the three larger roses shown in the photo above. A dime was included to show the scale. See the first page of this article for the smaller free crocheted rosebud pattern. The third page has the free crocheted leaves patterns.

 Materials for Larger Rose

Two steel crochet hooks: Boye Size 4 and Size 9 (2.00mm and 1.40mm).
Tapestry or candlewicking needle.
Crochet cotton thread size 10, 4 ply. J&P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, Article 64, in color 15 (Shades of Pinks) was used for the sample below.

 Directions for Larger Rose

These directions are written without abbreviations to make them easier to follow with the photos. The sample is worked in variegated pink crochet cotton. The effect is different, depending on whether you start with a lighter or a darker section of the thread.

First double crochet in third chain from hook

1. With size 4 hook, chain 12. Switch to size 9 hook and chain 2 more for a total of 14 chains. Continuing with size 9 hook, work 4 double crochets in the third chain from the hook. Work all stitches under two threads of the chain (see photo).

Chain 1, slip stitch in the next chain, chain 1

2. Chain 1, slip stitch in the next chain, chain 1 (see photo). Make 4 double crochets in the next chain.

Six petals worked for crocheted rose

3. Repeat Step 2 four more times for a total of six petals. Slip stitch in the final chain and end off, leaving a 10" tail for stitching. The piece in this photo started with the palest pink and the thread gradually grew darker, petal by petal.

Sew together from the back side with a tapestry needle

4. Thread the tail end on a tapestry needle. With the right side facing in, roll the petals into a flower shape. Working from the back side, stitch through the bottom of the rose to secure, catching the center. Weave in the ends.

Crocheted roses in variegated thread, with either dark or light centers

With the variegated thread, you can wind the same finished petals either starting with a dark center or with a light center. This photo shows the piece from Step 3 wound in two different directions, one clockwise and the other counterclockwise.

See the third page for directions for crocheted leaves. Page one has the small size crocheted rosebud pattern.
