Illustrated directions for crocheted flower leaves in two sizes

© 1994, 2009 by Judi Maddigan
The three roses have larger leaves than the smaller rosebud has.

This page has crochet patterns for the two sizes of leaves shown in the photo above. See the first page of this article for the smaller free crocheted rosebud pattern. The second page has the free crocheted rose pattern.

 Materials for Leaves

Two steel crochet hooks: Boye Size 4 and Size 9 (2.00mm and 1.40mm).
Tapestry or candlewicking needle.
Crochet cotton thread size 10, 4 ply. J&P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, Article 64, in color 48 (Hunters Green) was used for the sample below.

 Directions for Larger Rose Leaves

These directions are written without abbreviations to make them easier to follow with the photos.

Single crochet in third chain from hook

1. With size 4 hook, chain 5. Switch to size 9 hook and chain 2 more for a total of 7 chains. Continuing with size 9 hook, single crochet in the third chain from the hook. Work all stitches through the back ridge of the chain, going under only one thread (see photo).

First leaf completed

2. Double crochet in the next chain, treble crochet in the next chain, double crochet in the next chain, and half double crochet in the final chain.

Second leaf completed

3. Without cutting the thread, repeat Steps 1 & 2 for the second leaf, switching hooks for the first 5 chains as before. End off and use the thread tails to sew the leaves to the back of the finished rose.

 Directions for Small Rosebud Leaves

The smaller leaves are worked similarly, and you can refer to the photos above.

1. With size 4 hook, chain 4. Switch to size 9 hook and chain 2 more for a total of 6 chains. Continuing with size 9 hook, single crochet in the third chain from the hook. Work all stitches through the back ridge of the chain, going under only one thread.

2. Double crochet in each of the next 2 chains, and half double crochet in the final chain.

3. Without cutting the thread, repeat Steps 1 & 2 for the second leaf, switching hooks for the first 4 chains as before. End off and use the thread tails to sew the leaves to the back of the finished rosebud.
